The Plight of the Virus Fight (...And Not the Kind Your Children Give You)by Bruce J. Felber, MAS, Creative Director, Traymore Marketing
Yes, by now we may be growing weary in the plight against those nasty computer viruses. But it is important that we do not let our guard down. We must continue to wear the virus armor. If you are anything like us, then you know bits and pieces about virus protection, but have not gotten professional advice on the basics of prevention. Robert Weiss, President of the Errington Group, has come to our rescue many times. He graciously offers the following advice for the virus-protection impaired.
"There are a few very simple steps that can be taken to prevent a virus invasion," states Mr. Weiss. "If you follow these basic steps, your chances of being exposed to a virus are greatly reduced.
"First, do not have your e-mail set to auto preview. This setting automatically opens the email and you are now vulnerable to any virus attached without even opening the email message.
"Second, never open e-mail if you do not recognize the sender or if it looks suspicious. This is especially true with e-mails that instruct you to follow certain directions or go to specific websites. We must be aware of the great many hoaxes out today. A great website for checking into these hoaxes is hoaxbusters.ciac.org. Here you can look up specific hoaxes to see if you have been victimized.
"Third, you must have a top quality anti-virus product. Be sure to keep the definitions up to date on at least a weekly (if not daily) basis. If you have a DSL or cable hookup, then you need to know what protection comes from the box. These connections allow your computer to be on the internet constantly. Does it have a firewall? If not, you need to install one."
