2007 is over, so what did I do all year?

Michelle HirshI'm a big task oriented person and heading into 2007, I had a few things I definitely wanted to cross of my list. Professionally, Felber & Felber was growing rapidly and I was given the responsibility to find a good member for our team. Outside the office, I attended an AAF-Cleveland Marketing Course and brushed up on the latest information that is being taught to students today.

My priority was our team. We knew we needed to add someone but we weren't quite sure of the role and responsibilities this new member would take on. We began the year looking for an intern and then had a brief idea of possibly hiring a seasoned professional. We couldn't decide! So the three of us had several sessions examining our skills, what we enjoy doing and where we need to fill in the gaps. Ultimately we decided it would be in the company's best interest to hire someone—we're in it for the long run and we needed someone who felt the same. We narrowed down our interview process to a few final candidates and found that by hiring Kathryn Landers we were adding not just an employee, but a team player with the same goals as our firm.

The most surprising thing I did in 2007 was learning how to hire someone. I had interviewed people in the past before, but not like this. I love reviewing resumes so this was a fun task for me. I also enjoyed learning all the logistics in hiring someone. The process was long but the boys put the pressure on me to find them admirable candidates so I wanted to be sure the new employee would be the best fit ever.

As the months went on my priorities shifted, as they should. Priorities shift every day, every week and every month and that's okay as long as you have the big picture in mind and keep on track with your overall goals. I learn every day to be flexible in this industry; it keeps me on my toes and allows me to react to the newest trends and information.

If I had to go back and change something I did in 2007 it would be to get involved more with new business. There is something incredible about building a client up from the ground and watching them take off. Sort of like a proud Mom! This year my efforts are shifting towards meeting more business professionals and making our team more visible. I have gained new responsibilities and am eager to see what I can do to grow us even more.

Becoming more involved in the area communities is something I greatly enjoy. In 2007 I became involved with the Solon Chamber of Commerce and felt good about knowing I can contribute to our surrounding community. .

Personally, last year I did a lot of things for the first time in my life. Justin, my boyfriend and I went to New York City and I saw my first Broadway play—Les Miserable was absolutely incredible. Bruce Springsteen puts on one heck of a show! I was also a guest of Andy Birol's at a Cavs playoff game against Detroit.

But, one of the most rewarding things I did, that wasn't a first time occurrence, was participating in AAF-Cleveland's Scholarship committee each January. In 2007, I served as the Scholarship Committee Chairman and had a hand in awarding $20,500 in scholarships to deserving students and in 2008 we awarded $21,000 to twelve deserving students. You can't ask for a more rewarding experience.
